HA NOI — An inter-governmental agreement between Viet Nam and Russia to transport used fuel rods from the Da Lat Nuclear Reactor to Russia from May 2013 was signed yesterday by Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Dinh Tien and Deputy General Director of Russia's the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom Nikolay Spasskiy.

Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Quan and Russian Ambassador to Viet Nam Andrey G. Kovtun witnessed the signing ceremony.

The two sides affirmed that this agreement served as a legal base for the two countries' co-operation in transporting highly enriched uranium (HEU) fuel rods used at the Da Lat Nuclear Reactor to Russia.

Minister Quan said that this agreement contributed to boosting Russia's assistance in helping Viet Nam develop its nuclear energy field and implement its pledges to ensure nuclear safety, security and non-proliferation.

Since 2007, Viet Nam has been taking part in a programme to switch from HEU fuel to low-enriched uranium (LEU) in an initiative of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the USA and Russia to manage HEU fuel used in the world's nuclear reactors.

In 2011, the Da Lat Nuclear Reactor was successfully put into operation using LEU fuel. — VNS
