French-Vietnamese man kept a crowd of hundreds on edge for three hours on a Ho Chi Minh City street Sunday when he threatened to jump off a building and kill himself, VnExpress reported.

According to witnesses, Nguyen Thanh Sang, 28, climbed a 12-meter-high two-story building on Ton That Tung Street in District 1 at around 3.30 p.m. and started screaming.

Despite people’s efforts to persuade him to come down, Sang kept cursing in Vietnamese, English, and French, and threatened anyone approaching him with a knife.

Police officers and firefighters then arrived on the scene, but he kept them at bay by threatening to jump.

Two hours later he moved to the next house which is seven meters high, and again threatened to jump.

But he then handed the knife to the police despite refusing to come down.

At around 6.30 he lost his footing and fell, but escaped with minor injuries thanks to a mattress that firefighters had spread out.

The man was taken to a local police station for questioning.
