Four people including three children drowned this morning (March 13) and four others were hospitalised after a boat sank on the Giong Ong To River in HCM City's District 2.

HCM CITY— Four people including three children drowned this morning and four others were hospitalised after a boat sank on the Giong Ong To River in HCM City's District 2.

Giong Ong To is a tributary of the Sai Gon River.

Initial investigations show that the boat, 2m long and 70cm wide, was too small to carry the eight people who were crossing the river to pray and make offerings at the Mieu Ba (Lady Temple).

It is believed that the boat capsized and sank because the children on board refused to sit still.

A local man on a motorised boat, who heard a cry for help, was able to save four people, who are said to be in stable condition after being hospitalised.

The bodies of Nguyen Thi Luom, a 46-year-old woman, Nguyen Kim Quyen, a 12-month-old girl, Nguyen Thanh Tam, a 12-year-old boy and Tam's sister, 10-year-old Nguyen Thanh Thao were found in the morning by rescue forces deployed to the site.—VNS
