The Hanoi police yesterday prosecuted Nguyen Dac Thang, 19, a former national boxer, for illegally possessing weapons, including a shotgun, bullets, a knife, and a crossbow.
On October 30, after they broke up a fight between Thang and some other young men at the Tran Phu – Tong Duy Tan junction, they searched him and found the weapons.
After being arrested, Thang, a resident of Ba Dinh District, confessed to the police that he had intended to use them in the fight.
He reportedly bought the gun in the northern province of Lang Son for VND10 million (US$480).
It was the third time he had been caught with illegal weapons, the police said.
Last September the Ba Dinh District police fined him VND5 million for possessing a crossbow and a knife.
Last month later he was penalized VND6 million for having a homemade gun.
Thang had dropped out of boxing last July and set up auto components trading company in Long Bien District, local authorities said.
