Flying high with VOV

VOVNews has confirmed its status as a prestigious online newspaper among the Vietnamese press. The VOVNews website officially came into being on February 3, 1999, just one year after Vietnam was connected to the internet. During its initial period, the site had to update news in a very manual way. Programmes were produced at 45 Ba Trieu, Hanoi, and then carried on floppy disks by motorbike to the technical department in 58 Quan Su to be posted online. On February 16, the voice of President Tran Duc Luong was broadcast online during the Lunar New Year Eve. After this, VOVNews received an array of emails from radio listeners on the internet, especially Vietnamese expatriates. Over the past few years, VOVNews has contributed to extending the coverage of VOV. Its radio broadcasts for overseas Vietnamese began on July 10, 1999, have lived up to all the expectations of listeners on the internet. In August 2005, VOVNews started streaming four VOV radio channels online: VOV1 (News), VOV2 (Social Affairs), VOV3 (Music) and VOV5 (International). In 2004, VOVNews also started to upload video clips onto its website. Xuan Qua, a Vietnamese expatriate from Canada, said emotionally that VOV and VOVNews were listened to or read by his family and other Vietnamese families abroad on a daily basis. The songs and music from VOVNews reminded them of past memories and consoled them when they were living far away from the homeland.
