Five needy students of the Muong ethnic minority group of the Centre for Teenagers and Vinh Dong Primary School in Hoa Binh have received Nguyen Weigl Scholarship given by US Professor cum poet Bruce Weigl.
The beneficiaries used to drop out of school and might have to give up studies due to poverty. Bui Minh Hien, one of the five, has a two-year-old sick sister and his father died of cancer; his family is sheltering in a make-shift hut.
Apart from these scholarships, totally worth VND 17 million, those students could also be given both spiritual and material supports to secure their schooling until they finish university.
The sum for scholarships comes royalties from literary works printed in Vietnam of Bruce Weigl, Nguyen Thi Hanh Weigl and Vietnamese translator Nguyen Phan Que Mai.
Professor Bruce Weigl said he was happy that he could do something for Vietnam, especially Vietnamese students. He hoped to expand his scholarship program with his coming literary works.
