Ho Chi Minh City will begin construction of its first tramway at the end of this year.

Nguyen Thanh Thai, director general of the investor, Phu My Bridge BOT Joint-Stock Company, announced this on Wednesday.

As one of the city’s three routes planned by 2020, the US$250-million-plus tramway will start at the Thu Thiem Ferry and go through districts 1, 5, and 6 before ending at Mien Tay Bus Station.

It is expected to open in 2011, with trams with the capacity of 300 passengers running every two to three minutes.

In related news, municipal authorities on Wednesday asked the Department of Home Affairs to study the project for setting up a high-tech transport control center in cooperation with the city’s Transport Department and local police.
