Ha Noi—An eight-month old baby boy in Bien Hoa city has meningococcal disease, the Dong Nai's public health department confirmed today (Feb 9).
This is first meningococcal patient in Dong Nai this year. The boy was sent to the Dong Nai pediatric hospital on February 5 with a high temperature, vomiting and diarrhea. The patient was quarantined and received intensive treatment. The boy's condition is now in good development, the public health department reported.
The department also carried out medical tests for the baby boy's eight family members and relatives who had come into close contact with him. Four tested positive for meningococcal bacteria. All eight continue to be under the supervision.
Dong Nai's Preventive Medicine Department was also asked to sterilize the areas around the patient's living place.
Last month, three meningococcal patients were reported in Viet Nam; one in Ha Noi and two others in Ho Chi Minh City. None of these cases were fatal.
The Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday also warned this year, bird flu with the A/H5N1 virus, and meningococcal diseases appear as new threats.—VNS.
