The first group of Vietnamese migrant workers to flee the chaos in Libya arrived home early Saturday, an airport official said.

The 176 landed at Hanoi's Noi Bai airport on a charter flight from Cairo, said the airport official, who declined to be named.

They are among about 10,000 Vietnamese labourers who have been working in Libya, where thousands of foreigners are clamouring to escape amid fears of an all-out civil war.

The airport official said the repatriated Vietnamese workers were well.

On Thursday Le Huu Hung, counsellor at Hanoi's embassy in Libya, said Vietnamese migrant workers in the country were short of food and water. He pledged "all means" to get them out.
