Deputy head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade's Science and Technology Department Nguyen Huy Hoan spoke with Nong thon Ngay nay (Countryside Today) newspaper about plans to clean up industrial production.

The CPI component was first implemented in the five provinces of Phu Tho, Thai Nguyen, Nghe An, Quang Nam and Ben Tre in 2006. It has brought about good results and is highly appreciated by the Danish Embassy. We have also recently expanded consultation and support to many other provinces. As many as 43 cities and provinces have adopted CPI and some 57 CPI demonstration projects have been developed by domestic companies. On average, these companies have saved over 10 per cent of costs on electricity, coal, oil and water.

We will continue supporting and offering advice to enterprises in implementing CPI, mainly in raising awareness, supporting cities and provinces to build action plans on CPI, technical support and training.

I think the problem lies in awareness among enterprises, rather than financial support when implementing CPI. As in reality it is a form of investment that will bring about practical interests and efficiency to enterprises. So it is enterprises themselves which should be in the vanguard of implementing CPI, profiting themselves and the community.

CPI strategy has three major parts, including disseminating information and raising people's awareness about CPI, technical support provision, and developing policies to encourage enterprises to take part in CPI.

Campaigns to raise people's awareness about CPI are being implemented in most cities and provinces. We have also opened classes to train lecturers and consultants in CPI. This is a very difficult stage, and we're going to have to concentrate more on this in near future.

Every enterprise, regardless of whether State or non-State sector, will be continuously encouraged to participate in training courses to raise awareness about CPI, and encourage staff training.

At this point, enterprises will continue receiving financial support from Denmark and pay a partial sum of their own money to implement initial solutions as a commitment to investing in CPI. CPI demonstration projects will be selected to receive support from the State budget when CPI component finishes in August this year. —VNS
