Nearly 550 cases of fire and explosions occurred nation-wide, leaving 23 deaths, 44 injured and causing damages worth nearly VND128.5 billion (US$6.12 million) in the first four months of this year.

The Ministry of Public Security's Fire Prevention and Control Police and Search and Rescue Department, who released the statistics, cited people's low awareness of fire prevention and their careless use of fuel and electricity as major causes.

The department also noted that many fires occurred in residential areas, including markets, high-rise apartment buildings and industrial zones. — VNS
