Prosecutors in the southern province of Long An have once again concluded that a woman charged with murdering her journalist husband was the only culprit despite suspicions that she acted with an accomplice.

Cao Minh Tri, a spokesman of Long An People’s Procuracy, Thursday said the office has filed a charge of murder against Tran Thuy Lieu, 41, for killing her husband, Le Hoang Hung, a former journalist at Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborers) newspaper in 2010.

On January 19 that year Lieu set Hung on fire on fire when he was sleeping at their house in Tan An town after many quarrels, but then she rushed him to hospital where he died 10 days later due to severe burns, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors submitted the latest indictment to the provincial People’s Court nearly two months after the court ordered more investigations on suspicions that Lieu did not act alone.

They said police needed to clarify the purpose of phone calls and text messages between Lieu and Nguyen Van Tam, former chief of the provincial Market Management Team No. 5 and allegedly Lieu's lover, before, during and after the murder.

Hung’s family and his employer have repeatedly said Lieu could not have acted alone and wanted the police to look into Tam, who police said advised Lieu on how to mislead investigators.

However, since police first recommended charges for the case last July, they have not produced any charges against the former official, who was dismissed last August for gambling in Cambodia and for having an affair with Lieu

At first, prosecutors rejected the singular charge against Lieu and called for further investigations. But after completing a fresh probe, police again concluded Lieu was the only suspect.

The prosecutor's office then charged Lieu with murder out of "vile motives,” which carries a sentence of 12 years to death.
