VGP – The European Council decided to allow the European Commission (EC) to start free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with Vietnam, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
In its statement issued on May 31, the European Council said Vietnam is the 3 rd countries in Southeast Asia to negotiate a free trade agreement with the European Union.
In 2007, the European Council agreed to kick off FTA negotiations with ASEAN but the process was interrupted in 2009.
In December 2009, the European Council decided to pursue bilateral FTA with each of ASEAN member countries while stay consistent in a FTA between the two regions.
