HCMC – The Department of Environmental Crime Control (C49) under the Ministry of Public Security has fined Vietnam Australia Environment Company in HCMC VND550 million for violating environmental law.

Apart from the hefty sanction, the firm is responsible for taking remedial action for its wrong-doings, said Colonel Duong Van Linh, deputy head of C49.

The company specializes in collecting and treating hazardous industrial waste. In January, C49 found out it operated at over capacity when collecting more than 1.2 million kilos of hazardous waste and leaving it outside, which is against environmental regulations.

In addition, the firm hired outside transporters to deliver hazardous waste, and tripled the output of a waste incinerator to burn 300 kilos of waste per hour without seeking approval from competent agencies.
