A threatened bird species that is endemic to two Vietnamese provinces has been spotted in a third.

The grey-crowned crocias (Crocias langbianis), a passerine or perching bird, was found in Kon Tum in the Central Highlands.

“This is the first time the bird, which faces extinction, has been seen in Kon Tum,” VnExpress quoted Le Trong Tai, a member of the Birdlife International, as saying Wednesday.

The discovery proves that the bird’s habitat is expanding 300 kilometers to the north amid scientists' concerns that the bird is threatened by the severe loss of its natural habitat, moist tropical uplands.

Earlier the bird was only known to live around mountains in Lam Dong and Dak Lak Provinces.

The bird is among the least known worldwide, with conservationists saying there is little scientific material about it.
