(VOV) - The government considers 2012 as the year to establish traffic order and safety nationwide and tackle traffic congestion in the two major cities, Hanoi and HCM City.
This message was delivered by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at a ceremony held in Hanoi on January 3 to launch the 2012 Traffic Safety Year.
The Deputy PM said the government deems ensuring traffic safety an important political task for 2012.
Speaking at the event, Mr Phuc underscored the fact that the number of traffic accidents and resulting casualties across the nation, as well as the rate of chronic traffic jams in Hanoi and HCM City, remains very high despite considerable efforts by ministries, sectors and localities.
He urged the National Traffic Safety Committee and relevant agencies to boost efforts to raise public awareness of the issue, severely punish violations, and closely supervise law enforcement agencies in this field.
