Vietnam has a consistent policy to protect and defend national unity and sovereignty over the land, airspace and territorial waters of the nation, State President Truong Tan Sang reiterated at a meeting on Wednesday.

“It must be evident to all of you that Vietnam will always defend our national sovereignty including our land, airspace and territorial waters,” he told voters in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 on Wednesday ahead of the third session of the 13th National Assembly, which is scheduled to take place from May 21 – June 21, 2012.
He urged people to defend the nation, including islands in the East Sea, not only by awareness but also by action.
One of the necessary actions is to compile a system of laws to enforce the sovereignty of Vietnam over the islands, Sang added. At the upcoming meeting, the law-making National Assembly is expected to adopt the new Maritime Law.
“We are Vietnamese and so we can rule territorial waters and islands belonging to our sovereignty. A large majority of nations signaled their support for the creation of such a law. We are on our way,” the president confirmed.
On the same day, the Party secretaries of Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang held talks with local people to acknowledge their ideas and proposals for the coming meeting of the National Assembly in Hanoi.
