LAM DONG – A Dalat farmer has successfully grown potato plants in a greenhouse, proving this farming model offers higher productivity than outdoor cultivation, and paving the way for Dalat growers to switch to using this kind of potato for higher yields.

One year ago, Nguyen Dang Hien, owner of a well-known tissue nursery in Dalat City, developed planting techniques for greenhouse potatoes to improve output. In July last year, he started trial cultivation of two cloned potato roots O7 in his greenhouse.

The farmer has recently dug the first potato root, which provided 9.7 kilos of tuber, ten times higher than a potato root grown outdoor. Greenhouse potatoes have round tubers and thin peels, which look better and have higher quality than those cultivated outdoor.

Hien noted growing greenhouse potatoes requires different techniques from those applied to outdoor farming. Outdoor cultivation allows for 3,000-3,500 potato roots on 500 square meters, while 1,000-1,200 roots can be farmed over the same area in the greenhouse.

A potato root grown in the greenhouse offers at least five kilos of tuber, or five tons per 500 square meters, two times higher than the average output of outdoor cultivated potatoes, Hien said.

However, the biggest drawback of this farming model is that the cultivation period lasts nearly five months compared to three months for the outdoor cultivation. Hien said he is studying how to reduce the greenhouse potato farming time.
