Nhan Dan - Co To island district should continue protecting the country's sovereignty over its seas and islands.

This statement was made by Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan on her visit to Co To island district in the northeastern province of Quang Ninh on April 19.

She also affirmed that the Party and State have special policies in place to help people living in difficult conditions, especially in island districts.

Co To Island, about 60 kilometres offshore of Quang Ninh, plays a crucial role in the national line of defence in the northeastern sea. In 2001, the number of needy households in the district was reduced to 3.1% and 100% of school-aged children attended school.

The district has gradually expanded its commercial and tourism services and upgraded infrastructure including electricity lines, roads, schools and health stations.

Vice President Doan urged Co To to promote its strengths with a focus on fishing and sea tourism. The local authorities and unions should also renew efforts to improve the spiritual lives of local residents, eliminate hunger and reduce poverty.

During her visit, the Vice President visited and presented gifts to policy beneficiary families and disadvantaged children in Dong Tien commune. She also talked with soldiers at the Co To border post and those stationed on the island, as well as the workers building the Truong Xuan freshwater reservoir.
