VGP – The Government has approved the portfolio of the project “Adaptation to climate change through the promotion of biodiversity in Bạc Liêu Province, Việt Nam”.
The Provincial People’s Committee was assigned to verify, ratify and implement the project which is financially covered by Germany.
The project looks to expand the role of coastal preventive forests by using resources in a sustainable way and promoting bio-diversity.
Accordingly, consultancy and support will be provided to the local Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Forest Protection Department to develop measures to protect coastal lines and restore mangrove forests.
It also helps turn Bạc Liêu Bird Sanctuary into a biodiversity hotspot in the future.
The project is expected to create opportunities for fish-raising farmers to increase their incomes by reducing input costs and production risks, thus minimizing their dependence on natural resources and alleviating pressure on mangrove forests.
It is estimated that around 1,000 local households are directly benefiting from the project.
Bạc Liêu Province is situated in the south-eastern part of the Mekong Delta, along a coastline that is one of the most severely threatened by climate change.
There house important areas for agricultural production and aquaculture, as well as the livelihoods of some 100,000 people.
Altered precipitation patterns and rising sea levels are already leading to salt water intrusion which causes crop failures.
