City to develop new software park

HCMC – HCMC has assigned Quang Trung Software City Development Company to prepare for a new software park in the footsteps of the Quang Trung Software City (QTSC) based in District 12.
Chu Tien Dung, chairman of the company, said at the Super Investors’ Day 2012 last week that QTSC is 60-70% full. However, the city is in need of a new software park to receive a new wave of investment after QTSC is fully occupied, he said.
Where the new software park is located is unknown, Dung said, but it should be in an area with a favorable living environment because the information technology and software sectors require highly skilled people who have high living, working and entertainment demands.
Though he denied speculation that the location of the now-defunct Thu Thiem software park in District 2 could be chosen for the new facility, he said District 2 would be a perfect place for the new project.
Late last month, HCMC vice chairman Le Manh Ha signed a decision withdrawing the investment certificate of the US$1.2-billion Thu Thiem software park project over long delays.
QTSC has attracted 102 information technology firms so far, with foreign and local firms accounting for 44 and 58 respectively. The total number of people studying and working in QTSC amounted to 24,814 in July last year with over 5,700 engineers.
There are currently 19,107 people studying at seven information technology training institutions in QTSC.
The total value of products and services generated by the businesses in QTSC nearly reached VND2 trillion with VND983 billion in domestic revenue and US$49 million in export value.
