Viet Nam has demanded that China immediately cease actions violating Vietnamese sovereignty and hindering Vietnamese fishing boats operating in the waters of the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago.

The statement was made in a diplomatic note sent to the Chinese Embassy in Ha Noi by a Vietnamese Foreign Ministry representative on June 2 in protest against Chinese marine forces using weapons to threaten Vietnamese fishermen conducting normal, legal activities.

According to the note, "China's actions seriously violated Viet Nam's sovereignty and were at odds with the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC)."

On June 1, three Chinese military vessels had used guns to threaten the crew of the PY 92305TS fishing boat from central Phu Yen Province whilst it was operating in the waters of Viet Nam's Truong Sa archipelago. — VNS
