Cherry blossom comes to Hai Phong

VGP – Over 10,000 cherry blossom branches and 1,100 cherry trees were shipped from Japan to Hai Phong for the first cherry flower festival.

A cultural art performance took place on March 12 in the northern city to launch the cherry blossom festival.

The event drew the attendance of Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam and Mr. Isao Iijima, special advisor to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The festival will run until late March 14, expecting to strengthening international cooperation and cultural exchanges between Viet Nam and Japan in general and Hai Phong city and the country of the rising sun in particular.

Addressing the event, Chairman of the Hai Phong People’s Committee Nguyen Van Tung highlighted the close cooperation between Japan and the Vietnamese city.

So far, Hai Phong housed 130 Japanese-invested projects worth over US$ 40 billion and 5,000 Japanese experts.

The city has established relations with six cities and prefectures in Japan and integrated Japanese in its high school curriculums, the chairman noted, adding that Hai Phong has had a TV channel in Japanese.

Takahashi Anyumu from the Japan National Tourism Organization said as Viet Nam is among Japan’s key visitor market, Japan has set up a tourism representative office in Viet Nam, the 16th of its kind abroad, to promote the image of the country to Viet Nam and Hai Phong.

The cherry blossom exhibition takes place at the city’s central square until March 14 with about 100 cherry trees gifted by the government of Japan on display.
