The Hanoitimes - A chau van (spiritual singing) club has been established in the capital in a bid to preserve the traditional art form.

Chau van is performed in praise of the Mother Goddesses and junior deities.

Chau van is accompanied by flutes, castanets, drums and dan nguyet (the moon-shaped zither).

Hundreds of chau van singers attended the opening ceremony at Luu Phai Temple , Thanh Tri district, that was organised by the Centre for the Study of Religion and Culture.

Also at the club's launch, five veteran chau van artists, aged 80-90, were formally recognised as Folk Artists by the Vietnam Folk Arts Association.

The centre was founded to train students and hand down ancient ‘Chau Van’songs, promote research and introduce the folk art to audiences at home and abroad. It also aims to enhance the quality of ‘Chau Van’performances and gather information and documents to create a comprehensive database for the artform.

At the opening ceremony, the Vietnam Folk Artists Association also presented ‘For the Cause of Vietnamese Folk Art’ medals and certificates of merit to five veteran artists for their contributions to the practice and preservation of ‘Chau Van’ singing.
