Society:

_ UNDP Country Director Setsuko Yamazaki said on Wednesday it ranked Vietnam’s Human Development Index (HDI) 128 out of 187 countries surveyed. The country’s HDI rose 11.8 percent between 1999 and 2008, in which income growth has contributed 55.7 percent to its growth, while improved life expectancy and education have contributed 31.8 percent and 12.6 percent, respectively.

_ Hanoi police caught a train with 15 wagons carrying hundreds of cubic meters of smuggled wood Wednesday at Giap Bat Train Station in Hanoi and Tu Son Station in Bac Ninh. These wood were transported from southern provinces via Hanoi to be sold in Bac Ninh.

_ Ba Ria – Vung Tau police said on Wednesday they were further investigating a human trafficking ring which has illegally brought more than 120 Vietnamese to Australia by fishing boats. They arrested Nguyen Dinh Chien, Nguyen Van Toan from Vung Tau and Nguyen Van Son from Nghe An who made billions of VND after each trip.

_ Pham Phu Viet, director of the Southern Center of Viettel IDC were found hanging himself at his house on Son Cang street, Tan Binh district, Ho Chi Minh city at 14pm30 Tuesday. Viet’s acquaintances said that he had suffered from serious depression recently.

_ Continuous rain and rising flood in Vietnam’s Central provinces have led to 24 people killed and missing in Quang Nam, Da Nang, Thua Thien Hue and Quang Ngai.

Lifestyle:

_ The Ho Chi Minh University of Fine Arts will host a photography conference titled “Photography with Barnaby Steel” organized by British Council, Goethe Institute and Austrian Embassy in November 21 – 25. British photographer Barnaby Steel will talk about photography techniques through his projects in Vietnam and other countries.

_ Ngo Phuong Lan, deputy head of the Organizing Committee of the 17th Vietnam Film Festival said on Wednesday its judging criteria this time would only be based on film entries’ qualities. The festival will be held in Tuy Hoa, Phu Yen in December 14 – 17.

Sports:

_Vietnam’s delegate at the SEA Games 26 taking place in Indonesia from November 11 – 22 held its flag hanging ceremony at the city hall in Jakarta Wednesday morning. In the afternoon the same day, more than 200 athletes of gymnastics, shooting, athletics and others led by Hoang Tuan Anh, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism arrived in Palembang for the games.

_ French airlines Air France will add two more Ho Chi Minh – Paris flights on every Monday and Saturday, making a total of 5 flights per week. Low-cost airlines Jetstar will also add one more Ho Chi Minh – Singapore flight every day.

_ Japan continues to be the leading importer of Vietnam’s plastic products, which in the first ten months of 2011 saw a total of US$ 1.1 billion export revenue, up 31.1% on last year’s.
