-- 56-year-old Dinh Quang Suy, a member of the Nghia Trung Commune People’s Committee in Bu Dang, Binh Phuong was attacked and beaten on the head by 32-year-old Vu Trong Tan, another member during a committee meeting on Thursday. Tan accused Suy of defaming the local government by providing false information to the press.

-- 46-year-old Hoang Nhu Thanh from Lao Bao, Huong Hoa, Quang Tri was caught carrying 3.5 kilogram marijuana from Laos to Vietnam through the Lao Bao International Border on Thursday. He admitted to buying the drug from Laos.

-- 2 other cases of burning motorbikes were reported in Bac Ninh and Da Nang Thursday. They were two Honda Wave bikes and an Air Blade, which is also a Honda product.


-- An exhibition featuring 100 pictures of the Huong River in Hue opened Wednesday evening. Taken by local students, fishermen, art students and photographers, the exhibition which depicts both the beauty and pollution problem of the river is part of a community art project by Hue Fine Art University.

-- A private museum which displays valuable war memorabilia in Nam Dinh marked its fourth birthday on Thursday. The museum which has more than 1,000 historical items was founded by Vu Dinh Luu, a war veteran.


-- 38-year-old Italian defender Cannavaro is set to have a three-day visit to Vietnam starting on January 6. He will have a meeting with soccer fans in Ho Chi Minh at the Ho Chi Minh Youth Cultural House and a practice session with the national U-15 team. He was named the best player in 2006 by FIFA.

-- Vietnam’s national female king chess team was defeated 1-3 by China at the fourth round of the Women's World Chess Championship Wednesday in Turkey (local time). The team is currently ranked at 5th place with 4 points after two winning and two losing games.


-- Dinh Quang Tri, deputy director of state-owned group Electricity Vietnam (EVN) said he could not say whether the group will hike electricity price again in three months. The price has gone up VND 62 per each kWh after EVN announced its adjustment on December 12.

-- Poor quality and smuggled confectionery are being sold in many local markets in Ho Chi Minh city as there is a rising demand for the products for the coming Lunar New Year.
