Border guards in the southern province of Tra Vinh saved four fishermen from a sunken fishing boat about 10 miles from Duyen Hai District's Dong Hai Town early yesterday morning.
Two hours after receiving an alert, border guards found four fishermen floating in the sea and brought them ashore.
The incident happened when the boat's anchorage line was cut, said the boat's owner, Lam Van Nhanh, also a victim.
Three motorcyclists die after hitting boat
TRA VINH — A motorbike crashed into a boat in a freak accident in Long Binh Port in southern Tra Vinh City yesterday, killing three.
The motorbike, carrying three people, lost control while travelling at high speed along a port road.
It plunged off the road and crashed into a boat anchored in the port, witnesses said.
The three people on the motorbike died on spot.
Two held for trying to sell Dak Lak women
HA NOI — Tu Liem District's police have detained Bien Thi Huong, 28, and Nguyen Van Tuan, 23, for trafficking women, according to district police.
The four victims from Buon Me Thuot City in Dak Lak Province in the Central Highlands, aged between 17 and 30, were rescued after calling police.
On August 10, Huong and Tuan enticed the women to work in Ha Noi and tried to smuggle them to China.
Mekong Delta houses swept into river
DONG THAP — A landslide in the Mekong delta province of Dong Thap's Hong Ngu District on Tuesday swept three houses into the river.
The landslide, caused by floodwaters undermining the banks, left no casualties.
Provincial authorities have been moving 40 other nearby households to safer places.
Ex-bank manager detained
NINH THUAN — Former manager of the Bank for Investment and Development's Ninh Thuan branch, Vo Thanh Danh, was charged with violating regulations on lending to credit institutions.Two other bank employees are being prosecuted but are out on bail.
The three are alleged to have approved a VND200 billion (US$9.6 million) loan application by Nam Trung Bo Company which has failed to repay a debt of about VND80 billion ($3.8 million).
The company's chairman has also been detained for allegedly appropriating property.
500 traffic violators fined after police crackdown
HA NOI — Ha Noi Traffic Police reported on Tuesday that 500 people had been fined for traffic violations on National Highway 1A between Thuong Tin and Phu Xuyen districts under a crackdown that started at the end of last month.
The crackdown was aimed at restoring order on the highway and coping with the increasing traffic accidents in the area, mainly caused by illegal parking, speeding and road encroachment.
Police also co-operated with district authorities to increase traffic safety awareness through the district's loudspeaker system.
Since the start of this year, the area has witnessed 61 traffic accidents which left 69 dead and 19 injured, an increase of 9 accidents, 22 deaths and one injury in comparison with the same period last year, reported the police.
Illegal loggers kicked out of Phu Yen forests
PHU YEN — The Forest Protection Division of central Phu Yen Province's Dong Xuan District expelled more than 150 people from Trai Ton and Hon Co forests in Phu Mo Commune during the last week as they were allegedly seeking aloe wood, a forbidden good.
Vice head of the division Le Xuan Lam said that forest guards also seized 3 cubic metres of timber illegally chopped down and removed four camps of the wood seekers. —VNS
