CPV: The opening of the Quang Vinh 2 primary school, a new facility that will benefit more than 136 students and 10 teachers in Nam Duong hamlet, Quang Dien district, Thua Thien - Hue province was held on September 22. The school was funded by the Boeing Company and constructed by East Meets West Foundation (EMW).

“I’m so proud to recognize Boeing and everyone in this community for their commitment to a bright future for these young people,” said the governor of Washington, Madam Christine Gregoire, who is visiting Vietnam. “I hope to see some of them join the 1,200 students from Vietnam who come to Washington universities each year to further their studies. As we exchange culture, languages and students, we build a good foundation for trade and prosperity”.

The Quang Vinh 2 school is complete with fully furnished classrooms, a UV water-treatment system, modern bathrooms, landscaping, gate, fence and paved pathway, and enough capacity to provide students and teachers with all-day school sessions. The facility was built at a total cost of 75,128 USD, with Boeing’s financial support and the local contribution of land, trees, fences, gates and the electrical system. Under EMW’s management, the new school is designed using green architecture and building principles, and utilizing natural ventilation, maximized light, purified drinking water and locally-sourced materials.

"Designing and building airplanes takes skill and knowledge, so at the Boeing Company we believe in education. Education brings hope to individuals and capability to a country. Perhaps a student from one of these schools will someday help design, build, fly or maintain a Boeing airplane", stressed Laura Peterson, Vice president of State and Local Government Operations for Boeing.

Before the new school was built, children in Nam Duong hamlet attended school in structurally unsafe classrooms. The space constraints and inconvenient location prevented students and teachers from attending a full day of classes and reaching school during the rainy season.

This school is the continuation of Boeing’s ongoing support for improvements to the education system in rural areas of Vietnam. Since 2005, Boeing has funded the construction of 10 kindergartens and primary schools in Central and Southern Vietnam through EMW and with other partners.

In the coming time, Boeing and EMW will participate in the hand-over of Vinh Trinh primary school number 2, Vinh Phung satellite branch in Can Tho province, another school built by EMW’s school construction program.
