Descendance is one of Australia’s leading indigenous dance groups and Saigonese fans are in for a treat when it performs at HCMC Youth Cultural House, 4 Pham Ngoc Thach Street, District 1 on April 16.

The performance in HCMC is part of Descendance’s Vietnamese tour as they also play at Hue Festival 2012 in Hue City on April 7 and Danang University of Technology in Danang City on April 13.

“We are proud to collaborate with the Youth Cultural House to introduce Descendance and their cultural performance to the people of HCMC. The band’s music combines traditional and contemporary indigenous culture and music of Australia,” said John McAnulty, Australian consul general, in a statement.

Since its establishment in 1993, Descendance has used over fifty dancers from diverse tribes across Australia and today it tries to create work for aboriginal artists in areas outside dance, from modeling, painting and popular music, to writing and acting. Descendance, along with world music artistic director Jose Calarco, has begun a new genre of contemporary indigenous performance; this fusion style has never been undertaken by an Aboriginal company before.

Descendance is one of Australia’s leading international cultural exports to the world. It won the World Dance and Peace Prize at the World Culture Open organized by UNESCO in South Korea in 2004, where they competed among entrants from seventy countries.

The program is organized by the Australian consulate general in HCMC.
