Song A Lu, a state official who built his reputation partly by cracking down on drug trafficking, was arrested yesterday after police in Bac Giang Province found 22 kg of heroin in his truck.

They also arrested Trang A Chu, 46, who was in the truck, and a third man later implicated during interrogation.
Police stopped the speeding 1.5 ton truck in Hop Thinh Commune, Hiep Hoa District at 1 p.m. Sunday and discovered 62 cakes of heroin hidden in partitions between the truck’s cabin and body.
Chu and Lu, a 37-year-old official in the district’s Long Luong Commune, reportedly confessed to transporting drugs in large quantities to Bac Giang multiple times.
Based on the testimonies of the two men, both from Moc Chau District, Son La Province, police detained a third man in Thai Nguyen Province later the same day.
Investigators said the three men belonged to a large-scale drug trafficking ring that has operated for more than a year using complex tricks to escape detection.
Provincial police are expanding the investigation to track down other members of the ring.
