ASEAN and India to co-operate in space

Senior officials of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and India held a meeting on space issues on June 19 and 20 in Bangalore , the capital of Karnataka State in India.

The meeting brought together representatives from space research agencies across ASEAN and India. The Vietnamese delegation was led by Nguyen Xuan Lam, the Director of the National Remote Sensing Centre at the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment.

At the meeting, the various achievements made in space research and the application of new space technologies in different economic sectors were discussed, with a view to raising levels of co-operation amongst the participating countries in the field.

Also discussed were proposals for more co-operation between India and ASEAN as a bloc as well as individual countries.

Subsequently, India will assist ASEAN countries in building and operating a number of facilities to monitor, collect and process data from satellites, as well as building and launching satellites and personnel training.

The construction of a data centre in Ho Chi Minh City, with Indian support, was also discussed at the meeting.
