ASEAN People’s Forum opens in Cambodia

Over 20 Vietnamese delegates attended the eighth ASEAN People’s Forum 2012 that opened in Phnom Penh on Mar. 28.



During three-days of sitting, over 1,000 delegates from regional mass organisations focused on discussing ethnic minorities, gender and development, women’s rights, vulnerable labour groups, the disabled, peace and security, information technology and press, HIV/AIDS, maternal and children healthcare, environment, natural resources and climate change, democracy and human rights, livelihood and food security, the State relations and social organisations.

The recommendations drawn from the event will be put on the table at the ASEAN Summit, to be held in Phnom Penh in early April.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An said as ASEAN Chair, Cambodia will create a mechanism for mass organisations to meet ASEAN leaders and acquire the forum’s recommendations this year.

Initiated in 2005, the event is held on the sidelines of ASEAN Summits with regional mass organisations and non-governmental organisations taking part.-VNA
