Manga artists compete for award

The sixth International Manga Awards were launched in Viet Nam for all artists including Vietnamese and foreigners.

The award is sponsored by the Embassy of Japan for enthusiastic manga artists who have contributed to the promotion of manga overseas.

The selection will officially be carried out by the sixth International MANGA Award Executive committee.

One top work and three distinguished works will receive the golden and silver prizes. The Japan Centre Foundation will invite the winners to Japan to attend the award ceremony. They will also meet with Japanese manga artists and visit publishing houses in Japan.
The international manga awards were established to share Japanese pop culture and promote a greater understanding of Japan.

Exhibition explores river landscapes

Riverscapes IN FLUX, an exhibition that features different kinds of art works by 17 young artists from Viet Nam, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia and the

Philippines, will open in HCM City on Sunday.

The exhibited works will include multimedia installations, object installations, photo series and videos.

The artists reflect in their works the ecological as well as socio-economic and cultural changes that the riverscapes in their countries are currently experiencing.

The exhibition, organised by the Goethe Institute in Viet Nam, will run until May 26 at the Cactus Contemporary Art Gallery, 17/12, Nguyen Huy Tuong Street, Binh Thanh District.

HCM City to celebrate National Day of Brittany

A series of festivities to celebrate Gouel Breizh, the National Day of Brittany – a cultural region in the northwest of France, will be organised in HCM City on May 17 and 19.

Famous popular Breton singer Gilles Servat will perform with local talented musicians at IDECAF, 31 Thai Van Lung Street in District 1 on May 17.

The Gouel Breizh Kermess, presenting the traditional dishes, music and games of Brittany, will take place at the Binh Quoi II Village on May 19.

Spotted Cow hosts water pistol fight

The Spotted Cow, a popular sports bar in HCM City, will host a water gun fight to beat the heat on May 19.

Attendants are invited to bring all kinds of water guns from a mega-sized super soakers to classic plastic water guns, load it up and get ready blast to people. The fight will begin at 2pm at 111 Bui Vien Street in District 1.

Fund-raising flash mob dances for poor children

More than 40 Vietnamese and international dancers will gather to dance for a fund-raiser hosted by Apsara Dance Studio on Saturday. The event is targeted to raise money for underprivileged children via the Blue Dragon Children Foundation – a grassroots charity working with kids in crisis throughout Viet Nam.

The dancers will present a series of flash mob dances featuring belly dance, zumba, hip hop, jazz for kids, and bachata.

Rooftop party features famous K-Pop songs

The first-ever K-Pop party for all fans of South Korean pop music will take place at The Rooftop Bar&Restaurant on Saturday.
During the event that will run from 9pm until midnight, DJ Andrew Tang from the Avalon Club in Singapore, will present all the greatest hits of famous South Korean bands and singers.

The Rooftop is located on the 19th floor of Pacific Place, 83B Ly Thuong Kiet Street.

Friends of Vietnam Heritage (FVH) – an informal group of Ha Noi residents from many countries working voluntarily to promote and preserve Vietnamese cultural and historical heritage, will host a movie screening on Friday, May 18, from 7.30pm at the Hanoi Cinematheque, 22A Hai Ba Trung Street.

The movie Le Petit Vietnam, which is presented in Vietnamese and French, with English subtitles, is about the children who still remember fighting in the school yard over a racist word with their French peers but who also introduced Vietnamese to them. In other words, the movie is a story of integration and national identity.

Viet Nam-Japan complex initiated

A space for a Viet Nam – Japan Culture Exchange will be set up in Viet Nam's National Sports Complex and include cuisine, performances, and Japanese-style garden areas.

The Japanese style gardens will be built by the national complex and two partners, Aquagreen and Akikoi. It will be placed in the Water Sport Palace.

After its completion in August, the garden will be home to arts and culture exchange activities and displays of Japanese bonsais and aquariums.

Famous bands to perform in Ha Noi

International bands will perform in massive live concert, MTV EXIT, at Ha Noi's My Dinh Stadium on May 26.

The MTV EXIT (End Exploitation and Trafficking) concert is a return of the MTV EXIT campaign to Viet Nam as a nation-wide initiative to combat human trafficking.

The concert is produced in partnership with the Viet Nam government, the US Agency for International Development, the Australian Government's Agency for International Development, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The bands performing will be rock band Simple Plan from Canada; pop band from South Korea Brown Eyed Girls and Australian singer Kate Miller Heidke.

After performing to screaming fans across Asia this will be Simple Plan's first-ever live performance in Viet Nam. The concert will premiere on Viet Nam Television and on MTV Viet Nam in May 2012.

Leading hair stylists to reveal tips

Three leading hair stylists, including Leslie from Norway and John Savio Pereira and Renee Melek from the US, will visit Viet Nam to exchange experiences with domestic professionals on current world trends.

It will be an excellent opportunity for Vietnamese hair stylists to display their abilities.

The event will take place in HCM City on May 18, Ha Noi on May 21 and Da Nang on May 24.

HCM City to host ‘2012 Prestidigitation Gala’

The 2012 Prestidigitation Gala will be held at the Ho Chi Minh City Circus Theatre at the September 23rd Park on May 11.

Famous prestidigitators including David Hung, Hoang Lang, Taylor, Kao Long, Tong Son, KTay, Thanh Huyen, Ngoc Anh and Anh Tuyet will join the event.

The event is being organised by the Ho Chi Minh City Circus Troupe and Ho Chi Minh City Circus and Prestidigitation Association. The event will run until May 20.

Tickets are priced at VND100,000-VND200,000 per person.
