Distress calls from a Vietnamese cargo vessel reached a satellite station in northern Vietnam Tuesday, after the boat with 15 aboard became trapped in rough waters off the coast of India late last month.

Mayday signals were received by the Hai Phong land communication satellite station which said that the boat had been unable to move anywhere since losing its steering wheel on June 26, around 32 sea miles (59 kilometers) away from shore, Vietnam News Agency reported.

The boat has been out of food and is in grave danger sinking.

It belongs to the Anh Son Commercial Transport Company in Hai Phong and is carrying more than 4,300 tons of wood from the city port to India.

Vietnam Coastal Communication Station has sent requests asking Vietnamese boats in the area and Indian agencies to help rescue the stranded vessel.
