By the end of June, 2010, Vietnam had more than 170,000 HIV carriers. Hanoi is one of the localities with the highest number of HIV carriers.
The Vietnamese Businesswomen’s Council, in coordination with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the US Agency for International Development, held a meeting in Hanoi on September 23 to honour 10 businesses which have led HIV/AIDS prevention activities and generated jobs for HIV carriers.
These businesses helped to reduce HIV infection, protect the health of their workers and create good working conditions for HIV carriers. They encouraged HIV/AIDS prevention in the workplace, developed regulations and official communication on HIV/AIDS prevention, and offered HIV/AIDS services to their workers.
Nguyen Viet Thanh, head of the Emulation Department of the Ha Tu Coal Company in Quang Ninh province - one of the 10 awardees - said the company encouraged 76 drug users to detoxify and recruited them for work.
Ngo Thi Thanh Hang, vice chairwoman of the Hanoi municipal People’s Committee, said all businesses should consider HIV/AIDS prevention an important part of their sustainable development strategies. Prevention activities are not just charitable activities, but necessary measures to protect the health of their workers.
