Vo Huy Danh, director of the Preventive Medicine Center in the Mekong delta province of An Giang, said that despite all efforts to curb hand-foot-mouth disease in the province, there continues to be a disease pandemic which is not abating.
Recently, the hand-foot-mouth disease has claimed the lives of seven children in An Giang Province and 1,300 infectious cases have been reported so far, ten times higher than in the first three months of the year.
Health authorities have expressed serious concerns over the development of the disease as patients continue to increase by almost 50 cases per day.
The entire State machinery has been mobilized and drastic measures are underway to tackle the disease, said Danh.
Most affected cases are children under the age of five and who are usually staying at home these days because of summer vacations.
With the ongoing holidays and more children playing in public parks and entertainment centers, the risk of infection is even higher.
Accordingly, the health sector and province leaders have called for better awareness in parents of the disease, and for more distribution of soaps and chemicals to households who have children under the age of five.
