HCMC – Southern Power Corporation (EVN SPC) plans to start work on a project early next month to develop a grid to give nearly 9,000 households much-needed access to electricity, mostly of Khmer people, in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang.
The project is part of EVN SPC’s plan to develop power networks in Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh and Kien Giang provinces with total investment capital of some VND900 billion this year. When in place, the networks are expected to supply power for about 55,000 households, mainly Khmer ones.
Deputy head Nguyen Binh Trung of EVN SPC’s Planning Committee said all the power grid development projects in those provinces would kick off some time this year. Also, they are set for completion within the year, Trung noted.
Besides installing power transmission systems connecting the national grid with each commune, EVN SPC will additionally support each Khmer household with one bulb, electrical wires and other related electrical equipment.
Now the ratio of households using power in the four provinces reaches up to 95% while only 93% of Khmer people have access to power, Trung said.
EVN SPC said it had invested about VND2.9 trillion to upgrade power transmission systems, distribution stations and electrical wires and operate grid schemes to bring around 35 billion kilowatt hours of electricity to 21 southern provinces this year.
