President salutes late leader Ton Duc Thang

AN GIANG — A memorial site dedicated to the late President Ton Duc Thang in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of An Giang received certification as a national historic site with a ceremony held in the city of Long Xuyen.

Addressing the ceremony, President Truong Tan Sang called Thang a shining example of a communist who overcame many challenges as a prisoner of imperialists during the fierceness of war to devote his life to the cause of national liberation and the people's happiness.

He remains an outstanding symbol of the national unity policy of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, Sang said, pointing to Thang's revolutionary ethics and his virtues of modesty, simplicity, industriousness, thrift and honesty. He is the pride of the Vietnamese Party and people, Sang said.

Since it was established in 1988, the memorial site has been open to visitors daily. It hosts large festivals two times per year to mark the late President's birth and death anniversaries. — VNS
